Gisborne Intermediate Garden post

At Gisborne Intermediate we are lucky enough to have a school garden. The land for this was donated by Columbine, which is found on the border of one side of our school grounds. We have many kids who are lucky enough to head out to Horticulture during our tech time throughout the year. We also have a keen group of Horticulture extension students who make this space so great by spending lots of time out at the gardens. Many of these kids actually come from our Hub. We are proud of all the work they do and how they contribute to making our school a better space.

Turanga Heritage Trail Walks

Last week we started the first of our heritage trail walks.  Our local area is well known for its many rivers.  Our school syndicates are even named after the rivers: Waimata, Turanganui, Taruheru, Waipaoa.

Our first trip out was to climb Titirangi to find a good vantage point to check out our many rivers.  Did you know that Turanganui is the shortest river in the southern hemisphere?

Our walk around our local maunga, Titirangi, helped us to learn all about both our Maori and European history.  From us there, we could see the rivers as well as the Oneroa walkway, where many of our locals spend time walking.

A view of our port and the intersection of the three rivers.

The view of the Oneroa walkway.  A great place to enjoy the local sights.

Captain Cook, who came to Gisborne on his ship, the Endeavour.  From up here, you can also see the statue of Young Nick, who first sited land here.

We're looking forward to the next trip out and learning more about our local place and our local history.
