Start of Term 4 2018

Wow!  How fast is the year going!?

We have reached term 4 already and many of our students are starting to think about where they might head for high school.  At this point in the year, many of the kids have some real highlights from their time at Gisborne Intermediate, whether that be sports trips away, class trips, exciting learning or Action Week.  Some of what we'll be posting over the next couple of weeks will be to do with these highlights.

In the meantime, it was a real highlight for many Year 8 learners, being able to attend their first Waka Hourua orientation visit towards the end of last term.  For many kids, it was their first time aboard any kind of large sailing craft, and the opportunity to explore the different parts of the ship and navigational components was really interesting.  Their faces say it all!
Huge thanks to Kevin Weatherley for his amazing photography!  We are very grateful!

Digital Leaders

Base Williams, along with the rest of Hub 10, have spent most of the 2018 year delving into a wonderful Manaiakalani Cybersafety curriculum and are now relishing the challenge of using blogging as a tool to share their learning and their voices, with the world.

As blogging gained momentum, many of our learners started to get excited at the potential blogging had for allowing them a wider audience.  Our Year 7's had a great brainstorm session in Week 6, developing ideas of learning objects we could 'Learn, Create, Share' on our blogs.  Exciting times ahead.

Our learners are learning how to be not just connected, and navigating in cyberspace as Digital Citizens, they are moving towards the experience of being Digital Leaders.  Read more about Digital Leaders vs Digital Citizens at this link.  Watch this space.

Science in School

These first few weeks of science have been fantastic.  In order for the kids to have a taster of lots of different kinds of science, the teachers have designed a series of lessons around Living World, Material World, Physical World and Planet Earth and Beyond.

The first few lessons we have undertaken have been looking at skeletons and their purpose.  We were lucky enough to have Tracey, Matua Wayne's wife; who is a physiotherapist, visit our hub to talk through the purpose of our skeleton and look at models of some of our bones and joints.

Our students asked some wonderful questions and we were really impressed with the depth of their knowledge so far.  Many of the students have since been working on extension tasks that demonstrate their understanding of the purpose of other supporting structures, such as exoskeletons and building framework too!

From this, they collaboratively created slides.  Congratulations to the groups below, which produced outstanding slides about their learning.
